The thesis is dedicated to the research of changes in status of the phenomenon
of reality in postmodern culture. Author performs culturological analysis of the
phenomenon of reality in the context of contemporary relativistic worldview. This
analysis includes the retrospective review of problematization of the concept of
reality in the culture of XX-XXI centuries. Changes in the status of the phenomenon
of reality are analyzed as the part of the whole system of transformations in the
culture. The postmodern “lack of reality” has been defined as the significant absence:
the reality in the postmodern culture is not “lost”, but repressed (verdrängt), distanced
in the result of systematic cultural transformation in XX-XXI centuries. This status of
the phenomenon of reality intensifies postmodern simulation and forming of
hyperreal cultural space, which could be deconstructed through psychoanalysis and
described as contemporary phantasmatic scenarios of the subjective distancing from
the reality.
Conceptions of the simulated reality and institutionalization of the hyperreality
had been criticized by author as an ineffective theoretical practice, which is focused
on the confirmation of the very conception instead of holding the research of the
contemporary culture’s tendencies. Author held culturological analysis of the idea of
reality in the psychoanalytic theory of Jacques Lacan, who proposed the
understanding of the reality through the concept of the subject, its structure and
subjective stance. In the result of this analysis author performed in the thesis the
conceptual apparatus for description and research of the reality in contemporary
culture. This apparatus consists of the trilogy:
- Real (as a complicated state of mind before the subjective experience of
language; in lacanian meaning, Real is impossible to think rationally, it is a
pre-differentiation state);
- Reality (as a mental experience of the differentiation of the world that
provokes traumatic feeling of the subjective alienation);
- Actuality (as a cultural space that is constituted in the result of subjective
phantasmatic distancing from the Reality).
Alongside this, author refines the following concepts in the context of cultural
studies: the Other, the Absolute Other, the phantasm, mechanisms of distancing from
the Reality etc.
Such conceptual apparatus had been demonstrated by author as an adequate
one to researching and understanding of paradoxical situations and events in
contemporary culture. Author analyzed the category of “ideology” as mechanism of
subjective distancing from the Reality in postmodern culture. It has been proved that
function of ideology is to legitimize social disparity as the source of the experience of
the Reality of splitted society, of absence of social unity. Author analyzed the
following possible strategies of the functioning of ideological mechanism of
distancing from the Reality: “interpreting as intervention”, “ideological
phantasmating”, “demanding of the private incarnated Other”. It has been proved that
paradoxes and antinomies in the culture of XX-XXI centuries have not eventual
nature, but are caused mostly by fundamental mechanisms of subjective distancing
from the Reality and contemporary tendencies and forms, which they take. Author
proved that in postmodern culture the phenomenon of economization of subjectsubject relationships becomes intensified. This phenomenon is defined as
unconscious intentions of the subject to save efforts on satisfaction of its desires and
to obtain acceptance of its “I” during communicative practices.
Author performed culturological research of the cinematography to identify its
specific qualities in the context of the distancing from the Reality. Cinema has been
represented and explored as the phenomenon that forms particular phantasmatic
strategies of the distancing from the Reality in the contemporary culture. In the result
of this analysis author substantiated the following concepts. The first one is the
concept of the “phantasmatic strategy of the subjective filmic stance” – as the
strategy of the distancing from the Reality. The function of this strategy has been
defined as such one that lies in the providing with the specific transcending stance in
private cultural practices of the subject. This stance is close to the viewer’s stance
during a film show. The second concept is the “filmic Other” – as the phantasmatic
figure that is constituted by subject instead of postmodern absent Other and that
supports the subjective phantasmatic self-admiration. Filmic Other is defined as notlegislative figure, the private symbolic image of Other that has been put up according
to subjective expectations. Filmic Other provides subject on Symbolic level with
desired acceptance of its “I” without demanding more of its requires.
Such phantasmatic distancing from the Reality in the postmodern culture
strongly affects on tendencies of the institutionalization of new strategies of subjectsubject relationships in the culture of XXI century, which could become an object of
another fundamental research in the context of cultural studies.
