Description:
The dissertation is devoted to the comprehensive research topic of the museum,
club, and library institutions development of Sumy region in the late 1930's – the
second decade of the twenty-first century as an integral part of the pan-Ukrainian
cultural process. The paper describes an aggregate picture of the formation,
development and functioning of the network of cultural and educational institutions
of Sumy region in the predefined period. The directions, forms, and methods of
cultural and educational institutions work are determined at different historical stages.
A comparative analysis of the cultural institution’s activities, their interaction and
influence on the formation of the cultural environment of Sumy region, as well as on
the history of Ukrainian culture in general, is carried out. The role of state institutions
and the public in the development of the cultural and educational sphere of the region
is studied. The influence of complex and ambiguous socio-political and socioeconomic processes in Ukraine of the studied period on the development of cultural
institutions of Sumy region is considered. The experience of the museums, clubs, and
libraries of the region is generalized in order to provide practical recommendations
for the further development of the cultural and educational branch.
Regional cultural and educational topic of Sumy region have become the
research issue of special scientific research for the first time ever. The research is
conducted by the use of a wide range of archival documents, scientific and reference
literature, periodic materials. A lot of the archival sources mentioned in the paper
have not previously introduced into scientific document interchange.
It is established that library establishments became more widely distributed at
the end of the nineteenth century in the Sumy region, while museum and club
facilities did the same during the national liberation struggle of the Ukrainian people
from 1917 to 1921, made by the patriotic intelligentsia. During the years of the
Second World War the network of cultural and educational institutions of the Sumy
region was destroyed that is noted in the manuscript. Тhe process of restoration of the
cultural institution’s work lasted after the war for the middle 1950's. Development of
cultural and educational institutions is generically characterized positively in
quantitative and qualitative terms in the period from the middle 1950's to the 1990's.
However, the functioning of cultural and educational institutions took place in
conditions of strict regulation on the part of state and party members, and in a high
level of ideologization. Cultural institutions opened up new perspectives for the
development and promotion of a wide range of cultural, educational, leisure and other
services with the democratization of Ukrainian society in the period of state
independence. State-sponsored museum-based institutions have developed significantly
in independent Ukraine, but club and library institutions, for a number of objective
reasons, have only partially been able to realize new opportunities.
